Where does the coloured halo along the contour come from?
Those are pixels whose colour is already blended with the background — they were semi-transparent in the shot itself. The “Shrink edge” slider pulls the boundary inward by a few pixels and removes them. One pixel usually settles it and is barely noticeable.
Why is the canvas larger than I asked for?
Because the outline did not fit. A contour around a subject that touches the edge would have to be clipped — instead the canvas grows.
Can I outline without removing the background?
No: the contour follows the mask edge, and the mask is exactly the result of separating subject from background. The background itself can stay visible if you pick a different framing mode.
